Skye choked on her coffee. And not just a pretty throat-clearing for effect. Flakes of pastry and coffee caught in parts of her throat they shouldnât have been in, produced a considerably violent outburst.
Three years seemed impossible. She didnât evenâ
The thought stuttered to a halt, but Skye forced herself to face it. She didnât even know if her mother would be here in three years. The almost constant sob caught in her chest, throbbed. But if Mariam Soames wasnât alive in three years, then did it really matter what Skyeâs world looked like then?
âWater?â Benoit offered as if he didnât know that he had been the cause of her choking.
âNo,â she said, clearing her throat. âNo, thank you. Three years...â she said, turning over what that might mean in her mind. âYouâd be celibate for three years? Really?â she said, her errant thought escaping before she could stop it.
Now it was Benoitâs turn to look shocked.
âExplain,â he demanded.
âIt might not be a real marriage, but Iâm assuming there will be a fair amount of public scrutiny at the news that a well-known international playboy...â she pushed on past the scoffing sound he made â...is getting married. And I have absolutely no intention of being humiliated while you are repeatedly photographed with your latest plaything.â
âPlaything?â he repeated.
âNot the point, Benoit,â Skye replied, knowing that she would stand firm on this.
âAnd you?â
âWhat about me?â
âAll things being equal, you would also be celibate for three years.â
âThat...thatâs fine,â she said, suddenly not liking the way the focus of this conversation had turned back on her.
âThereâs nothing fine about it,â Benoit returned hotly. Honestly, Skye really didnât know what he was getting so worked up about. The one time that sheâd had sex with Alistair had been...had been...well, fine and she just didnât really know what all the fuss was about.
He was staring at her now as if there was something wrong with her and she didnât like it. It was the same way sheâd felt when sheâd overheard women talking about sex as if it was something incredibleâas if she were missing something. Life was so busy that sheâd not really had a chance to make close friends and there was no way she was talking to her sisters or mother about it. Her mother, who thought that sex was a divine right, that bodies should be worshipped and that love was something that was better shared with as many people as possible.
Oh, God. She wanted to put her head in her hands. She was a twenty-six-year-old prude.
âWe can talk about this later,â she said evasively.
âOh, no. Weâre talking about this now. Weâll have other things to talk about later,â he warned.
âWhyâare you going to demand that I share your bed if youâre not allowed to find others to do so?â
âDonât be crass. I wouldnât do that to an innocent.â
He said the word with such distaste that it took her a moment to realise what he was saying.
âWaitâyou think Iâm a virgin?â
âYouâre not?â he asked, just as shocked.
